Urban Space in Contemporary Photography. Public Discussion with Sergei Sapozhnikov, Vladimir Levashov, and Dmitry Ivanov

ROSPHOTO and the Saint Petersburg Society “A–Ya” continue the project Contemporary Russian Photography, which currently features a solo exhibition by contemporary photographer and artist Sergei Sapozhnikov. ROSPHOTO will host a public discussion dedicated to the urban environment in contemporary photography. Speakers: Sergei Sapozhnikov, Dmitry Ivanov, and Vladimir Levashov. Admission is free with prior registration. 

Sergei Sapozhnikov (b. 1984) is a contemporary artist and photographer. He began his professional career in 1999 as a graffiti artist, later incorporating some of the techniques and aesthetics of street art into his photographic practice. His work explores photography as a form of contemporary art, the performative nature and context of the photographic process, and the personal character of staging images based on material from the real world. 
He has participated in numerous Russian and international group exhibitions, including at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, Italy (2010), the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (2012), the Whitechapel Gallery in the United Kingdom (2016), and Manifesta 12, the European Nomadic Biennial of Contemporary Art, in Palermo, Italy (2018). His solo exhibitions include projects at the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan (2014), the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (2018), the State Tretyakov Gallery (2020), and GES-2 House of Culture in Moscow (2023).

Vladimir Levashov (b. 1958) is a curator of contemporary art and photography exhibitions. His projects include the 17th Exhibition of Young Moscow Artists (1986), Russia’s participation in the São Paulo Art Biennial, Brazil (1996), and the exhibition This Vague Object of Art from the Stella Art Foundation collection at the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009), as well as Sergei Sapozhnikov. House and Garden at GES-2 House of Culture in Moscow (2023).
He is an art and photography critic and the author of numerous articles, as well as two books, Photo Century and Lectures on Photography. He is also a Senior Lecturer in Photography at the HSE University School of Design.

Dmitry Ivanov (b. 1989) is a photographer and educator. He has been teaching photography since 2010. Since 2021, he has been the founder and instructor at Medium, a photography school in Moscow. He is also a co-founder of Adept.Works agency (2015) and a co-founder of Monochrome Loft photography studio (2010–2013).
He has translated books on visual culture published by Ad Marginem and the New Literary Observer.
