The museums have signed a cooperation agreement that provides for an exchange of multimedia exhibitions dedicated to this significant commemorative date.
From May 8 to May 21, ROSPHOTO will host the exhibition “Leafing Through the Pages of Frontline Letters”. The virtual display will present more than 30 letters written by participants of the Great Patriotic War from the collection of the Donetsk Republican Museum of Local History, specially digitized for this exhibition. These unique materials offer visitors an opportunity not only to learn brief biographies of the soldiers-liberators and see their photographs, but also to understand what people thought and felt when they went to war against the Nazi invaders.
At the same time, the Donetsk Republican Museum of Local History will present the multimedia exhibition “The Banner of Victory,” featuring photographs from the ROSPHOTO collection. The exhibition is based on works by Evgeny Khaldei, a classic of Soviet wartime photography and a native of Donetsk.
“With the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, millions of people were mobilized into active service. A mass evacuation from frontline areas began.
The war separated thousands of families.
Hope rested largely on the postal service, which helped people find their loved ones—both on the home front and at the front lines. Every day, thousands of letters, postcards, newspapers, and magazines were sent to the front. No fewer letters traveled in the opposite direction — to cities, towns, and villages where families and loved ones remained”.

The history of the Great Patriotic War embodied on paper and seen through the eyes of its participants is not only an important documentary source, but also a powerful bearer of moral and emotional meaning. These letters contain a fragment of warmth and inner energy that the defenders of our Motherland sent to their loved ones.
The exhibition “Leafing Through the Pages of Frontline Letters” is based on materials from the collection of the Donetsk Republican Museum of Local History and features more than fifteen digitized letters written by participants of the Great Patriotic War. The exhibition offers an opportunity to become acquainted with brief biographies of the soldier-liberators and to gain insight into the inner world of those who went to war against the Nazi invaders.
