As part of the exhibition “European Photography of the 1950s–1960s,” a special section of the display is dedicated to the memory of Andrey Ivanovich Baskakov, the first chairman of the Union of Photographic Artists of Russia.
The exhibition “European Photography of the 1950s–1960s” presents a unique collection from the Union of Photographic Artists of Russia, which was transferred to the ROSPHOTO collection in 2022.
The exhibition is dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the death of Andrey Ivanovich Baskakov (1948–2014), the first chairman of the Union, who had made a significant contribution both to the enrichment and preservation of this collection and to the development of the photographic movement in Russia.
Andrey Ivanovich Baskakov began his career as an amateur photographer, working in the art laboratory of the Dmitrov Porcelain Factory. From the late 1970s, he joined the board of the All-Russian photo club “Kadr.”
Later, he coordinated the activities of rural and urban amateur photographers at the Central House of Folk Art of the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR, where, in 1986, he was appointed Head of the Department of Photographic Art and taught courses in “History of Photography” and “Photographic Mastery.” In addition, Baskakov lectured at the Department of Cinema and Photography of the Moscow State Institute of Culture.
In 1989–1990, he led an initiative group to establish the Union of Photographic Artists of the RSFSR, and was elected chairman. He was then re-elected to this high position at four subsequent congresses of the Union of Photographic Artists of Russia, holding this position up until 2014.
Andrey Baskakov’s outstanding contribution to the development and promotion of Russian photography was recognized in 1996, when he was awarded the honorary title “Honored Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation.”
It is no coincidence that the exhibition “European Photography of the 1950s–1960s” features, alongside works by leading photographers from France, Italy, the Netherlands, and other countries, materials devoted to the life of the Union of Photographic Artists of Russia, including historical moments from exhibition and festival openings, scenes from portfolio reviews, selection processes and discussions of Russian photographers’ expeditions and open-air sessions, as well as the activities of Andrey Ivanovich Baskakov himself.
