ROSPHOTO presents a historical and artistic exhibition project dedicated to the formation and development of Russian aviation. The exhibition "Wings of Russia" displays unique images that depict the most important stages in the construction of the first aircraft; the first flights; the beginning of the organization of mass passenger transportation. An extensive block of the exhibition is dedicated to photographs of military exploits and victories, inextricably linked with the history of aviation, as well as photographs capturing aircraft of the post-war years and the formation of the space era.

Among the authors of more than 150 photographs presented to the viewer are original prints by Georgy Zelma, Ivan Shagin, Arkady Shaikhet, Mark Markov-Grinberg, Moisey Nappelbaum, Boris Kudoyarov, Evgeny Khaldey, Georgy Lugovoy, Viktor Kononov, Alexander Kitaev.

The name "Wings of Russia" is borrowed from the memoirs of the outstanding Russian pilot Vyacheslav Tkachev. The exhibition covers the period from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1990s.

A large public program is planned as part of the exhibition: film screenings, lectures, meetings, thematic children's events.

By 1917, domestic aviation had formed as an independent branch of the armed forces, capable of solving tactical and strategic problems. However, after the Civil War, in the 1920s, the aviation industry and the Air Force had to be practically recreated. Despite all the difficulties, our country quickly became a leader in the aviation race.

Many aviators and balloonists became idols of the youth. The first in the country to be awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union were seven pilots who participated in the rescue of the crew of the steamship Chelyuskin, who had been trapped in the ice.

Record flights along new air routes, including across the vast polar expanses, made cult figures of Valery Chkalov, Vladimir Kokkinaki, Georgy Baidukov and many others.

The popularization of aviation and aeronautics was facilitated by Osoaviakhim, a public organization whose courses trained glider pilots, aeronauts, mechanics, and parachutists.

During the Great Patriotic War, Soviet attack aircraft delivered powerful blows to the tank and infantry units of the Wehrmacht, and sent the ships of the fascist fleet to the bottom. In 1944, air supremacy was effectively won, and the Soviet Air Force completed its victorious path in the Far East, striking at militaristic Japan.

The post-war period marked the beginning of the era of jet aviation. A powerful innovative breakthrough allowed the Soviet Air Force to reach a qualitatively new level and form a civil air fleet.

From this stage, the next step was taken – into space. And it was also made by pilots – Yuri Gagarin, Georgy Titov, Valentina Tereshkova …

Vyacheslav Matveevich Tkachev lived to see their flights and, finishing his book "Wings of Russia", wrote: "How good it is to have such a Motherland!"

The project was prepared by the State Museum and Exhibition Center ROSPHOTO together with historian Dmitry Mityurin and aviation historian Gennady Petrov, with the participation of the State Museum-Reserve "Tsarskoye Selo" and the Museum of the History of Youth Organizations "Kitezh Plus".

The exhibition project will be especially interesting for family audiences: an audio guide has been prepared for adult visitors, and creative quest tasks around the exhibition for children. A large public program is planned as part of the exhibition: film screenings, lectures, meetings, and themed children's events.
