The State Museum and Exhibition Centre ROSPHOTO invites specialists from museums, archives, and libraries to take part in the annual international conference “Photography in the Museum,” which will be held from April 21 to 23, 2026, at ROSPHOTO (St. Petersburg, 35 Bolshaya Morskaya Street).

The conference “Photography in the Museum” focuses on the study of museum photographic collections, as well as the principles of their acquisition and attribution, and has been held at ROSPHOTO since the early 2000s. The theme of the 2026 conference is “Cinema, the Performing Arts, and Photography.” The conference proceedings will be published in the academic volume “Photography in the Museum,” in conjunction with the event.



The main goal of the conference is to explore the interrelation between cinema, the performing arts, and photography from the 19th to the 21st century.

Photography, Cinema, and the Performing Arts

Artistic features, genres, and subjects of photography related to cinema and the performing arts. Photographic interpretation of the specific nature of cinema and various forms of spectacle (circus, show, theatrical performance, etc.). Methods of documenting film production and performing arts

History of Collection Formation and Use

Specific features of photographic collections related to cinema and the performing arts. Methods and approaches to attribution. Photography as a tool for studying cinema and the performing arts

History of Photographic Studios and Photographers

Origins and circulation of photographic series and individual photographs. The history of photographic studios and workshops. Biographies of photographers.



We kindly ask you to submit your applications for participation (full name, affiliation, and a tentative paper topic) by October 31, 2025. The deadline for submitting materials to the conference proceedings “Photography in the Museum” is December 22, 2025.
