There is currently no specialized education in Russia that unites art history with the chemistry and technology of photographic materials. ROSPHOTO therefore undertakes the dual role of conducting research and enhancing the professional expertise of curators, conservators, and restorers working with photography.
Scientific conferences and seminars held at ROSPHOTO cover a whole range of important topics that are interconnected: digitization, cataloging, archiving, conservation, restoration of photographs and much more.
Since December 2008, ROSPHOTO has functioned as a scientific and methodological center responsible for the preservation of photographic materials held within the state funds of the Russian Federation, as established by Order No. 226 of December 4, 2008.
The preservation of photographic collections depends largely on maintaining proper chemical and climatic storage conditions, including adequately prepared facilities and appropriate climate and air purification systems. This program places particular emphasis on comparing Russian and international standards for photographic storage, as well as the equipment and materials used in this field.
The state collections of the Russian Federation contain a huge number of photographic monuments, which make up approximately one third of the museum and a significant part of the archival funds of the country. Complex tasks related to the problems of preserving and using photo funds are solved within the framework of a single National Program. In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Culture No. 226 dated 4.12.2008, the State Museum and Exhibition Center ROSPHOTO has been assigned the functions of a scientific and methodological center for the implementation of the Program for the preservation of photographic documents included in the state funds of the Russian Federation.
One of the most important tasks of the Photographic Document Preservation Program is to provide access to photographic collections. Every year ROSPHOTO holds the conference "Photography in the Museum", which is attended by dozens of researchers from all over Russia and abroad. The conference is devoted to the study of photographic collections held in state storage. Following each conference, ROSPHOTO publishes illustrated collections of reports. To date, thanks to the work of the conference, about three hundred museum, archival and library photo collections have been introduced into scientific circulation. Collections of reports from the conference "Photography in the Museum" will form the basis for the creation of a scientific reference publication on state photographic collections of the Russian Federation.
The topics of some conferences overlap with anniversary events. Thus, in 2015, the conference was dedicated to photographic documents from the Great Patriotic War; in 2017 — to the photographic legacy of the revolution and the formation of photo collections in the early years of Soviet power. The theme of the 2018 conference was the photographic legacy of the Romanov family, stored in the state funds of the Russian Federation. In 2020, on the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the theme of the conference was "War Photography".
The collections of reports from the conferences are located in the "Publications" section and are accessible to read.
Since 2010, the State Museum and Exhibition Center ROSPHOTO has held the annual conference “Photography. Image. Document,” dedicated to expert research and the technical and technological analysis of historical documents and photographs. Based on the conference proceedings, ROSPHOTO publishes a scientific almanac of the same title, which is indexed in the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI).

The scientific almanac "Photography. Image. Document" has been published by the State Museum and Exhibition Center ROSPHOTO since 2010. The almanac is conceived as a platform for constructive dialogue between specialists involved in the field of preserving material cultural heritage: cultural historians, cultural scientists, source researchers, archivists, paleographers, art historians, criminologists, natural scientists developing tools and methods for analyzing photographic and manuscript monuments, experts in the field of cultural values.
In addition to developing storage monitoring systems, normalizing the storage of photographic documents and providing user access to images, ROSPHOTO employees have developed a series of practical consultations aimed at improving the professional level of specialists working with photography, combining art history knowledge with knowledge in the field of chemistry and technology of photographic materials, as well as in the field of working with museum funds and collections. The topics of practical consultations are related to problems of storage, conservation, restoration and use of images for various purposes.
Practical consultations are held in the ROSPHOTO restoration laboratory equipped with modern devices under the guidance of highly qualified specialists using expensive restoration materials, the use of which is included in the cost of training; classes are practically individual, since the maximum number of participants in a group does not exceed five people. During the training, students have the opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge in practice.
Seminar participants have access to the extensive ROSPHOTO library. We are always glad to see you at our regular practical consultations. You can leave requests to participate in a practical consultation on a topic of interest to you, and our staff will prepare a seminar specifically for your request.
