Podgorkov Sergei Stanislavovich born 3 September 1953 in Novgorod. In 1974, worked as engine mechanic at the Baltic shipyard. During 1974 and 1975, he studied at the Department of Photojournalism of the People’s Public Service Professions University at the Kirov Palace of Culture, attended the Kirov DK photo club. In 1977, at the All-Union Exhibition of Amateur Photographers in Moscow, he was awarded the silver medal for one of his works. In 1978, he became one of the first members of the Zerkalo club, working in the genre of social documentary photography. In 1983, he worked as photo correspondent for the Moryak Baltiki (Baltic Seaman) specialized newspaper. In 1984, he was fired “for ideological reasons”. From 1984 until 1987, he worked as photographer at the Mintransstroy Design Institute. In 1987, he moved to the Arctic Circle, where he worked as photographer in the town of Labytnangi. He returned to Leningrad at the end of 1990. In 1991, he began to work as photo correspondent for the Leningradsky Literator (Leningrad Man of Letters) newspaper, a periodical of the Leningrad branch of the Union of Writers of the USSR. Created a vast series of photographic portraits of Leningrad writers. In the August of 1991, he photographed the events of the Soviet coup d’état attempt in Leningrad. In 1997, he began work as a forensic photographer. In the late 1990s, he began to exhibit his work again.
