Lecture “Photography in Hungarian Literature: The Fortepan Archive”

Hungarian studies scholar, translator and lecturer Oksana Yakimenko and Natalia Dyachenko, Cultural Programmes Coordinator at the Liszt Institute, will introduce the Hungarian digital archive of personal photographs, Fortepan, as well as the poetry collection of the same name by Hungarian writer, poet and translator Zsuzsa Rakovszky.

The Hungarian digital archive, named after a photographic film brand once produced in Hungary, has been open to the public since 2010 and contains around 120,000 digitised images. Special attention will be given to the “Russian themes” represented in the archive.

Curator-led Tour with Oksana Yakimenko: “József Kádár: Photography and Artistic Experimentation”

Join curator Oksana Yakimenko for a tour exploring the work of Hungarian artist and photographer József Kádár (1936–2019) and his experiments with the photographic image. The tour will focus on Kádár’s use of light and composition, as well as his experiments with multiple exposure and electrography, examining how these techniques allowed him to explore new ways of seeing reality.

The tour will be led by Oksana Yakimenko, a Hungarian studies scholar, translator (member of the Union of Translators of Russia), and author of numerous articles on Hungarian literature and art.

Film Screening: “Classics of Hungarian Cinema”

The programme features The Age of Daydreaming (1964), the debut feature by acclaimed Hungarian director István Szabó, inspired by the French New Wave.

Set in 1960s Budapest, the film follows a group of young people just beginning their independent lives. They dream of a full and meaningful future and hope to leave their mark on the world. But their encounter with reality, along with the death of a close friend, prompts them to confront fundamental questions: What remains after a person is gone? How can one live a life that is truly meaningful? 

The film will be screened in its original language with subtitles.

Artist Talk with Photographer Giampiero Assumma

Giampiero Assumma (b. 1969) is a contemporary photographer, multimedia artist, and the winner of first prize in the Social Documentary category of the Hungarian Press Photo Competition. During the event, Assumma will share insights into his series Images of Budapest, his artistic journey, and the key stages of his professional career.
