Photographic exhibition and album – both dedicated to works of Vassiliy Nikandrovich Sokornov – represent an attempt to create the first full monographic research on work of this well known Crimean photographer.

Vassiliy Nikandrovich Sokornov, photographer and artist, is one of the most acclaimed masters of photography on the Southern shore of Crimea at the dawn of XX century, participant of many exhibitions in Russia and abroad.

The photographer has himself defined his specialisation as ‘views of Crimea'. He devoted himself in photographing views of Yalta, Alupka, Simeyiz, Gurzuph, Bakhchisaray and Sevastopol. His creations successfully competed with images on postcards and in albums published by Russian and international publishing houses. A fine artistic taste and high professionalism in technical implication of work are characteristic of the images of this author. A special feeling of volume and depth of space in his photographs was achieved by using the technique of direct contact prints when the size of glass negative is the same as the size of the print. Each of the images contains a whole world full of details that can be contemplated endlessly.

Photographs of Sokornov were widely reproduced during XX century in postcards, tourist guides and various editions dedicated to Crimea. His works are a pride of many state photographic archives and private collections. His photographic creations are stored in the collections of Alupka Palace Musuem, Yalta Museum of Local History, Krasnodar Museum of Art, Moscow House of Photography, Russian National Centre of Photography (St.-Petersburg), Russian National Library (St.-Petersburg), Museum of the Academy of Arts (St.-Petersburg).
